Visa cards are widely held and used. Each transaction generates a small fee that contributes to the company’s multibillion dollar revenue and profit stream. Visa and Mastercard together account for more than 75% of the U.S. credit card market.
Visa is accepted at over 150 million merchant locations worldwide. The company has emphasized upselling products and services and its value added services segment was the fastest growing area, increasing by 28% in early 2026. Investors are focusing on whether upselling volume can be sustained. Attention is also on AI agent capabilities and stablecoin integration. The company launched Intelligent Commerce Connect in April which enables AI agents to locate products and execute purchases using Visa pathways. Legislative and regulatory developments have created an environment where stablecoin settlement and backend modernization are prominent initiatives.
Regulatory proposals are a key headwind. The Credit Card Competition Act was reintroduced in January 2026 by Senators Dick Durbin and Roger Marshall. That legislation would require large banks to offer alternative card networks which has attracted support from major merchants such as Walmart and Amazon because of the potential for increased competition and lower processing fees. The share price has not shown a smooth rally as market participants weigh that threat. Merchants continue to rely on Visa for trust and security and on its AI driven security layers which are difficult for smaller fintechs to replicate as fraud evolves.
